Move-Out Cleaning Checklist for Nampa Homes and Rentals

A room-by-room checklist for empty homes and rentals, from Lana Property Service in Nampa.

Quick answer: Clean an empty home from top to bottom, room by room: inside every cabinet and drawer, appliances inside and out, bathrooms top to bottom, then baseboards and floors last. Do it after the last box and piece of furniture is out, and finish with a walk-through so nothing gets missed.

Whether you are a renter hoping to leave a place in great shape, a landlord turning over a rental, or a seller handing over the keys, a move-out clean is one of the last big jobs of a move. Use this checklist for homes and apartments in Nampa, Caldwell, Meridian, Boise and across the Treasure Valley.

Before you start

  • Wait until the home is empty. Cleaning goes faster and more thoroughly when furniture and boxes are gone.
  • Read your lease or listing agreement. Some landlords and buyers have their own move-out list. Make sure it is covered.
  • Work top to bottom. Dust high spots first, then counters, then floors last so dirt does not land on clean surfaces.
  • Take photos when you are done. Dated photos of each room are a helpful record.

Kitchen

  • Empty, wipe and dry the inside of every cabinet and drawer
  • Clean appliances inside and out: oven, stovetop, microwave, fridge and dishwasher
  • Degrease the backsplash, range hood and cabinet fronts
  • Scrub the sink and faucet, and wipe all counters

Bathrooms

  • Clean bathrooms top to bottom: tubs, showers, grout and glass
  • Scrub the toilet inside and out, including the base
  • Wipe mirrors, vanity, sink and the inside of drawers and cabinets
  • Clean light fixtures and exhaust fan covers

Bedrooms and living areas

  • Dust ceiling fans and light fixtures
  • Wipe baseboards and door frames
  • Wipe light switches, outlet covers and door handles
  • Clean inside closets, including shelves
  • Wipe window sills and tracks

Laundry room, garage and entry

  • Wipe the washer and dryer tops and the area behind and between them, if they stay with the home
  • Clean the dryer lint trap and laundry shelves
  • Sweep the garage floor and remove any leftover items, trash and recycling
  • Wipe the front door, doorbell area and entry closet

Tips for an easier move-out day

  • Keep a cleaning kit out of the moving boxes. Pack paper towels, cloths, trash bags, a vacuum and your cleaners last so they are on hand at the end.
  • Take out the trash as you go. Leftover bags slow down the final clean.
  • Leave time. An empty home always reveals more dust and marks than you expect, especially behind furniture and appliances.
  • Book help early. If you want a professional clean, schedule it as soon as you know your move-out date.

Floors last

Once everything above is done, vacuum carpets and hard floors, including corners and along the baseboards, then mop hard floors on your way out of each room.

Final walk-through

Walk through every room one more time with this list. Open every cabinet, closet and appliance. Check the garage, laundry area and entry. Turn off lights and fans, and make sure nothing is left behind.
